In the near future, American soldiers will be able to identify enemy forces, crimes suspected or people of national security interest just by taking a look around. Information security experts report that, using a pair of gamer headset with some modifications, soldiers will be able to see through a drone that will include facial recognition software.

In addition, by using these devices, the military will be able to read texts written in foreign language, use other drones available to increase their field of vision and train in an augmented reality environment.

The most recent developments in this project were recently presented; known as “Integrated Visual Augmentation System” (IVAS), this system includes a pair of lightweight glasses that mix digital elements in a soldier’s visual field, the information security experts mention.

In addition, in a plan that appears to come out of a sci-fi film, the U.S. Army plans to develop tiny, insect-sized drones to increase the visual scope of troops. In the first stage of this project, the Army will begin distributing these “personal reconnaissance drones” to help soldiers carry out effective field deployments; according to information security experts, U.S. Special Forces have been working with drones for at least four years.

The U.S. government believes that the necessary conditions for large-scale deployment of this technology will be up to 2020, so for now the military will continue to use conventional night vision goggles for various tasks, such as recognition or evasive maneuvers.

According to experts from the International Institute of Cyber Security (IICS), an Armed Forces sergeant who witnessed the demonstration of this technology stated that, during the event, a soldier hit a shot about 300 meters away using this device. The military has requested to remain anonymous. Army Futures Command, an area in charge of this project, was created a couple of years ago to implement substantial technological improvements applicable in military campaigns undertaken by the U.S. government.


CYLANCE & AI BASED ANTIVIRUS FOOLED TO AVOID MALWARE DETECTION

A group of web application security specialists designed a method to bypass Cylance’s antivirus solution, powered by artificial intelligence software. Using this method, specialists managed to trick this antivirus, making it think that malware variants like WannaCry are legitimate software.

Among members of the cybersecurity community it is believed to think of artificial intelligence as the ultimate solution for malware detection. Supporters of this idea claim that its use would significantly improve the capabilities of conventional antiviruses, as artificial intelligence is able to find updated versions of known malware and even unregistered flaws, such as zero-day vulnerabilities.

Security firm BackBerry Cylance has opted for the development of an artificial intelligence engine for PROTECT, its endpoint malware protection system; “This tool can anticipate malicious actors even for years,” mention the firm’s web application security experts.

However, the research, published by Vice, states that experts have already developed a method to circumvent the detection of this machine learning algorithm. Generally, hackers try to alter the source code of the malware to try to dodge antivirus programs, in this case, researchers developed a method that consists of taking some strings of legitimate software and adding them to the code of the malware, so this will be detected as a conventional program.

According to web application security experts, this approach was successful because Cylance’s machine learning algorithm focuses primarily on detecting benign software, ignoring malware’s own elements. In addition, this approach works even if the Cylance engine previously concluded that the same file was malicious, before the common software strings were added to it.

Experts tested this attack using the WannaCry ransomware, known for the computer chaos generated a couple of years ago, in addition to the latest version of SamSam, another dangerous variant of ransomware.

According to specialists from the International Institute of Cyber Security (IICS), this is a sign of the long work that remains to be done in the development of artificial intelligence because, although over the years this kind of attack vectors, this option will still not be a definitive solution.

RANSOMWARE NEXT TARGET IS YOUR FAVORITE RADIO STATIONS AND TELEVISION CHANNEL COMPANIES

Cybersecurity services specialists reported a ransomware attack that temporarily affected the operations of the community radio station WMNF 88.5 – FM, based in Tampa, Florida.

According to statements by interim general manager Cindy Reichard, that nasty incident began sometime on June 18. The next day, one of the radio station’s programmers detected strange behavior on the computer of one of the studios.

While trying to make a diagnosis, the station’s employees received a digital note that mentioned: “Your files have been encrypted. Pay the ransom and you’ll be able to recover them”. It is clearly a ransomware attack, mentioned experts in cybersecurity services. As noted before, this happens when an attacker installs malicious code to block access to the victim’s information or systems, demanding a payment in exchange for enabling access again.

After an emergency meeting, radio station officials decided not to pay the ransom and report the incident to the Florida Department of Justice. “The authorities assured us that sometimes ransomware victims send money to hackers and in the end they do not recover access to their systems”.

The main impact of the station occurred in the AudioVault system, which stores the audio files of the station, such as old programs, songs or pre-recorded promotional material, reported by experts in cybersecurity services. Therefore, some audio files stored on this system could be lost forever.

On the other hand, the station claims that its confidential files, such as bills, donators’ data or payroll records, were not compromised during the incident. However, security monitoring is still being implemented to prevent any further incidents.

The incident also interrupted the live broadcast of the station; for now, the radio station is broadcasting only music and recorded emissions, at least until the recovery process is complete; additional details, such as the malware variant used by hackers or the ransom amount are still unknown. According to experts from the International Institute of Cyber Security (IICS), the station sent the compromised server to a cybersecurity firm, where they will try to recover as many files as possible.


THOUSANDS OF MICROSOFT CUSTOMER ACCOUNTS COMPROMISED DUE TO CORPORATE SURVEILLANCE AND DATA THEFT

According to network security specialists, thousands of cyberattacks compromised the information security of more than 10k Microsoft customers last year. Most of these malicious activities were reportedly carried out from countries such as North Korea, Iran and Russia.

Microsoft’s corporate vice president for customer trust and security, Tom Burt, mentioned on the company’s official blog that “about 84% of the victims of these attacks are Microsoft’s business customers,” so the remaining 16% are individuals who use some of the company’s software solutions.

While Microsoft does not know whether these attacks are commonly motivated, they do accept that the scale at which attacks are taking place, in addition to the methods used by hackers, should alert authorities in various countries, as network security experts believe that these hacker groups have the capacity and resources to compromise security at a considerable level.

In the U.S. alone, about 700 civilian organizations interested in strengthening democracy using the Microsoft solution called Account Guard were victims of cyberattacks allegedly sponsored by foreign governments. In addition, according to figures collected by security firms around the world, about 90% of cyberattacks against civil or political organizations target US-based groups.

Network security specialists at the International Institute of Cyber Security (IICS) believe these figures to be a clear indicator that the security of the 2020 US election could be compromised. On the other hand, President Donald Trump recently stated that the U.S. has what it takes to keep the next election process safe from any foreign intervention attempt.

Along with China, the three countries mentioned above are the main U.S. adversaries in what is known as cyber warfare. Whether for intelligence tasks, corporate espionage, surveillance or as a way of influencing an electoral process, the hacker groups sponsored by these governments are constantly evolving to bypass U.S. inhabitants, private companies and government institutions’ protection measures.

The Kremlin’s influence has already been proven in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, so President Trump’s administration will not want a campaign of intervention to be re-run in his country.
